Welcome to MySpeak

MySpeak is a freeware tool that you can use either
          - to read any type of text from the screen. The text can be from text files, MS Word documents, PDF files or any other type of documents; or
          - to connect to the internet and also maintain a comprehensive list of your internet usage hours that you can view later. It maintains a list of the number of hours you spent on the internet and you can view the list as a chart on a daily, monthly or even connection-wise view.

Therefore, you must have MS Agent and also Merlin (MSAgent character, which speaks out the commentary) installed, in order to run MySpeak. If you have WindowsXP installed, you probably already have MSAgent installed. But with the older operating systems, you might need to install MSAgent from here.
Moreover, some other files may also be required like the VB6 runtime files (get it from here) as well as the Microsoft Ado (Again, get it from Microsoft). Usually, these files are already installed on your system and you might not need them.

How to Ask MySpeak to Read from an Active Application?

To ask MySpeak to read from any active application, here are the steps required - (i) Run MySpeak as well as the application you want to read from, if not already running.
(ii) then when the agent comes up, just right-click on it and choose "Read from Active Application", ie option #1.
(iii) After clicking, please also click on the application that you want MySpeak to read from. Please note that you have to do these two steps very quickly, one after the another.

Don't worry if you can not get it to happen in the first few times, a little bit of practice will certainly help you.
Example:- If you have a Word document that you want to read from, open the Word document and also MySpeak. Then, when the Agent comes up, right-click on it and click on option #1, "Read from Active Application". As soon as you do that, click on the text from the Word document. MySpeak should start reading it out to you.
This method might be very inefficient for very large text files as it takes up lots of memory. A better and more efficient approach is to use the clipboard as described in the next section.

How To Ask MySpeak to Read from the ClipBoard?

Reading from the clipboard is a better and efficient way of making MySpeak speak!!! Therefore, I would suggest you to use this method unless there is any specific reason to use the first method.

To ask MySpeak to read from clipboard, here are the steps that are required -

(i) copy the text that you want to read in your application. Usually this is achieved by dragging the mouse over the text or you can press Ctrl-A to select the whole text.
(ii) copy the text to the clipboard by either clicking on the Edit menu and choosing Copy or you can try pressing Ctrl-C.
(iii) Open MySpeak, if not already running, right-click on the agent and choose "Read from ClipBoard" ie Option #2.
And Voila, it should start reading the text out to you.

How To Ask MySpeak to Stop Reading?

Asking MySpeak to stop reading is extremely easy. All you have to do is to click on the Agent while it is reading. And it should stop reading. Or you can even right-click on it and choose Option #3, Stop Reading to forcibly shut him down!

How To Connect to the Internet?

To connect to the internet, the following steps are required -

(i) Firstly, open MySpeak if it is not already open.
(ii) Then, right-click the agent and choose option #6, ie "Connect to Internet"
(iii) It will bring up a new window that will automatically detect all you connections and put them in a combo box!
(iv) Choose, the connection you want to connect to, from the dropdown list and click on the Connect button.
(v) Browse the net as you would normally.
(vi) MySpeak will automatically detect and store the time that you spend on the net. This timer will automatically stop and vanish when you disconnect from the internet!

Please note that for storing and analysing time spent on the internet, you must connect to the internet through MySpeak. In other words, if you do not connect through MySpeak or if you connect directly through the Dial-Up Networking in Control Panel, then MySpeak will not be able to store your data.

Can I use a different agent?

Yes, if you want to change the default character of MySpeak, you can do that easily also. I have used the Merlin character because it is the default character and is usually installed on the computers having MSAgent. You might have several other MSAgent characters on your system that you might want to use. These are files having the extension *.acs. Or you can download them for free from microsoft(The website is http://www.microsoft.com/msagent).

To change the character all you have to do is right-click on the agent and choose option #4, ie Change Me. It will bring up the Browse for character window that you can use to browse for any agent character on your hard drive.

How To Analyse the Data?

As already said, MySpeak automatically stores the time you spend on the net each day. To analyse this data through the use of charts, just right-click on the agent and choose option #8, ie "Show Charts". It will give you a graphical representation of the time that you spend on the net as well as the average time, the maximum time and the total time.

You can alter the graph using the three drop-down lists, ie for the month, year as well as connection.

Needless to say, for proper analysis of the data, you need to use MySpeak to connect to the net for atleast 3-4 days.
